Kindergarten. It happened...seemingly overnight. One day I became a mother to a beautiful baby girl and the next day I became the mother of a kindergartener. Suddenly I am back in school. Those teenage years suddenly don't seem so far away.
The first week of school we had kindy orientation. Basically they had 4-5 kids come in for 90 minutes and get to know the teacher while the parents went to a meeting about school procedures. When I came back Olivia had a new best friend and then we rode on the school bus. The kids sat up front and us parents sat in back. When I got off the bus she was already inside the school with her new friend. Needless to say, Olivia was more then ready when school started the following week. She goes to school all day, every other day. 7 hours is a long day for a child. She was exhausted and asked to go to bed early.
When I picked her up from school last week the teacher came to the car with her. She told me that Olivia was the nicest little girl and such a big help. She told me that she knew the names of all the kids in her class and was helping some of the kids find their bus. She then asked if it was working okay for her to trust Olivia to come to the car. I really like her teacher and it was great to hear that Olivia is enjoyed in class. She has been more polite and a little calmer since she has started school. Clearly the structure is really good for her.
Having just Logan and Mackenzie at home is strange. It's much different and they are much calmer without Olivia home. They ask throughout the day where she is. I am thankful that it will be another year before they start preschool. I don't know what I will do at home by myself. It's amazing how used to the noise I have gotten. Kindy is the beginning of the end and I am just not ready to let go.
